As a volunteer participant in the YOU FUTURE project, I can confidently say that the project was highly beneficial and provided me with valuable knowledge, practical experience, and personal development opportunities.
Throughout the project, we participated in a wide range of educational activities, workshops, and field visits related to disaster preparedness and resilience. One of the most valuable aspects of the project was the opportunity to visit different institutions and facilities, including the Fire Department, AFAD Training Center, schools, libraries, and greenhouses. These visits allowed us to observe how different organizations contribute to disaster preparedness, emergency response, community awareness, and sustainability.
In addition to the educational visits, we took part in various team-building and practical activities. These included collecting litter in a public park, canoeing in Istanbul, and harvesting vegetables in a greenhouse. Such activities not only strengthened teamwork and communication among participants but also promoted environmental awareness, active citizenship, and community engagement.
Among all the learning activities, the workshop focusing on earthquake response was particularly memorable for me. During this workshop, participants worked in groups to analyze the responsibilities of different stakeholders in the event of a major earthquake in Istanbul. We explored the roles of coordinators, healthcare workers, volunteers, journalists, and disaster victims, and examined step by step how emergency response mechanisms operate from the first moments after a disaster occurs. This activity helped me better understand disaster management systems and the importance of coordination among different actors.
My initial expectations were largely met and, in many aspects, exceeded. The training program was well organized, interactive, and engaging. The workshops encouraged active participation and practical learning rather than passive observation. Furthermore, the international environment provided an excellent opportunity to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds.
I believe the project contributed significantly to my personal and professional development. Most importantly, it increased my knowledge and awareness of disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and emergency response. At the same time, it improved my English language skills through daily communication and cooperation with international participants. The project also enhanced my teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and intercultural competencies.
Overall, the YOU FUTURE project was an enriching and inspiring experience. It combined education, practical activities, cultural exchange, and teamwork in an effective way. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate and I believe the knowledge and skills gained during the project will be valuable both in my personal life and future professional activities.
